JUST THINK ABOUT IT – COMMITTED TO COMMITMENT

 When I use the term, "four- letter-word”, most people would think of words that should not be thought or spoken – cuss words.  I am going to use a "four-letter-word” that contains ten letters – COMMITMENT!

          I want to challenge us to give serious thought as to what has become of serious commitment to a cause or promise. Would I be far off the mark to say that, in many cases, commitment has become a quality of the past? Has it become a four-letter-word?

          In my parents’ day, a person would actually refuse to take payment for a job to which they had not given their best. Hard to believe, isn’t it! In those days, a person’s work was a testimony of their character.  People took pride in giving and doing their utmost regarding anything and everything to every undertaking.

     "I’ll do it!” was as good as saying, "It is done.”

     "I’ll be there” meant "I’ll be there - on time or early.”

     When an employer heard the words, "You can count on me”, it was always interpreted as "The job will be done as well as you can do it yourself, boss.”

     A person’s word was their bond.  "You have my word on it.” used to be as good as money in the bank or a written guarantee.

     There was a time when there was never a thought, much less a doubt, whether a loan would be paid back. A borrowed tool would be returned - on time. A promised deadline would be met - without excuse.  Commitment meant just that - commitment!

          Not today! Commitment has become a despised concept with various negative connotations. A person who is committed to their marriage partner, for example, is now the butt of office jokes.  A person who does more that is required at work is reported as "sucking up”. Students who apply themselves to their studies are labeled as "nerds.”

     Conversely, a man who commits adultery is patted on the back by all his "he-man” friends and is regarded as a "Casanova” or a "ladies man.”

     Call into the office as being sick and then go golfing.  It’s a big joke to you and everyone else!  Where is the faithful commitment to the job you said your boss could expect when you sent him your resume?

     You may win the honor of being "cool” if you fail an important test at school because you were up late at some wild party "smoking”, "shooting” or "popping”.  Are you willing to commit yourself and your future to those who are determined to ruin their own - just to be cool? Ever wonder why they call that stuff "dope”? 

     I wish I could gloat about how committed people are to the Lord and the church, but I can’t. Commitment there has become a "four letter word” as well.  Far too many people would rather sit back and gossip and criticize those who are working in the church than get off their comfortable Sunday morning pew and get committed to the work themselves. It is always better to fail at some good thing you are trying to do than to succeed at doing nothing at all. Commitment makes the difference!

          Too many times, weak, frail, excuses become a substitute for genuine, sincere, whole-hearted commitment that brings positive results. It is a far greater testimony of a person’s character when they count the cost of commitment and decide to say "No” when they are not able to do something than for a person to give a hasty "Yes” and then frustrate everyone else by not following through on their commitment.

       To what am I committed? Can people take me at my word? Can I be depended on to fulfill my commitment to commitment? Maybe it is time to seriously JUST THINK ABOUT

·          Nathaniel – 1 month old –fluid in head and possible blindness (nephew of Cora Berezowski)

·          Mike McCaw – healing for mother’s legs / father’s cancer

·          Bev Walsh – peace of mind/salvation/healing for family members

·          Kidz Fest - August 19. Please pray for this Billy Graham Evangelistic Outreach, to be held at the Armouries, involving 10 of our area churches
