CULTIVATING A GOOD MEMORY – Just Think about It

By Pastor Terry Grimes/Calvary Pentecostal Church

I remember my early years of church and Sunday school. One of the things that all my teachers promoted was memorization. It used to be much more highly emphasized as a method of learning than it is today.

Increasingly, I come in contact with people who suffer from either long term memory loss or short term memory loss. For some, sad to say, it may even be both.

Due to a number of factors, people are living longer. In light of this truth, we should all consider that the older we get the less we can do and the more we are given to remembering. Therefore, we must pay close attention to the memories we are creating because we will live with them for the rest of our lives.

Memory can be a wonderful treasure chest for those who know how to pack it well. It can also be a curse against those who thoughtlessly live their lives in a selfish manner.

Memory cannot always be relied upon to speak the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. As one "old timer” said to me recently concerning his younger days of sports, "The older I get the better I was.”

Some people have a terrible memory – they forget nothing. I have always been a proponent of the philosophy that a good memory is one that lets you forget the stuff that is not worth remembering.

The fabric of memory is woven from four major strands. Let’s consider them very briefly.

First of all, there is the strand of our thoughts. Our thought life is so very vital in creating good and precious memories. Our thoughts are the seeds of the actions of our lives.

Secondly, our actions form a strong strand in the weaving of our memories. What we do or did, or what someone else does or did, forms the strongest bases of our memories. When friends take a stroll down memory lane, you will often hear, "Do you remember when we…” That statement is most often followed by an action – good or bad

Thirdly, what we say and the results of what we say, can determine whether or not our memories will be a blessing or a curse. Have you ever said something that you wish you had not said? People remember for years what someone said against them but they forget all too soon many good things people have said to or about them.

Finally, our attitude toward someone or something is a strong thread that weaves itself into the fabric of our memories. Our attitude always effects our actions.

When life starts slowing you down because of age, what kind of memories will you have to look back upon as you recall events and people in your life? Whether your memories bring you joy or sorrow depends upon how you have woven into the daily fabric of your life the strands of thought, word, action and attitude

Create your memories carefully. You have to live with them for the rest of your life. Just think about it!
