THE CHRISTMAS QUESTION –JUST THINK ABOUT IT

Have you ever gotten a Christmas gift and you didn’t really know what to do with it? Maybe it just didn’t fit properly or it was not necessarily of your taste. Maybe you already had two of them in your collection. Maybe you just didn’t need it. Whatever the reason, you asked yourself the question, "What am I going to do with this?
That is the question that Pilate asked the Jewish people about Jesus. "What shall I do with this Jesus, who is called the Christ”? When that question is applied to the Baby in Bethlehem’s manger, it becomes what I call the "Christmas Question”.
History records for us the response of various people to the birth of Jesus. Their attitude causes us to examine our response toward the gift of the first Christmas Christ-child.
Mary and Joseph held Jesus. What a thrill that must have been for them! What thoughts must have raced through their minds as they wrapped God in strips of cloth and cradled Him close to their hearts keeping Him warm in the darkness of the Bethlehem stable!
The shepherds heralded Jesus. When the angels told the shepherds where to find the Baby and how to recognize him, they left their sheep and went to see Him. Having done so, they immediately left the manger scene and went throughout the area telling everyone what they had heard and seen.
Herod hated Jesus. When the Magi came to Jerusalem asking where Jesus was born, they referred to him as the "King of the Jews”. This infuriated Herod with frenzied jealousy. He hated this Jesus so much that he murdered every boy child under the age of two years.
The Magi honored Jesus. They had traveled a long, arduous journey to find this Child. When they came into His presence they bowed down and worshiped Him by presenting Him expensive gifts. Then they returned home a different way in order to protect Jesus from Herod.
What about each of us in 2009? What is our reception of Christ? He is not a Baby in a manger anymore. He is the risen, glorified Savior of the world. Do you hold Him close? Do you herald Him to others as the Christ? Do you hate Him as Herod did? My hope is that you honor Him as Savior and Lord as the Magi did.
Pilate took a bowl of water and tried to wash his hands of this Jesus. He could not wash his hands of Jesus and take a neutral, indifferent attitude – neither can you and I. We all must answer the Christmas Question. Just Think About It!
