At
Calvary Pentecostal Church, we have just begun a twelve week, Sunday
evening teaching series by Rev. John Bevere entitled "Extraordinary –
The Life You Are Meant to Live”. We viewed the first session last
Sunday night and it has sparked quite an interest.
There is an innate desire in all of us to want to live an "extraordinary” life."Mundane”,
"common”, "usual” and "ordinary” are all antonyms or opposites of
extraordinary. Who really strives hard to live such a life!
Consider the alternative. Some synonyms for extraordinary are "exceptional”, "rare”,
"unusual” and "remarkable”.Now
doesn’t that sound much more exciting! Just saying the word
"extraordinary” generates an inner stirring of expectation of something
great..
Have
you ever seen the TV advertisement where a man wins the lotto and gives
each of his children a key to their own cottage that he just purchased
for them? Did you think, if only as a passing thought, how great it
would be to own a cottage on a lake like that? What a great and
extraordinary vacation that would make!
What
about listening to someone you know tell you all about the great trip
or cruise they just had? Have you ever experience just a tinge of envy
wishing that you could afford to do that?
Someone
just experienced a wonderful and exciting accomplishment in their life
– something you have always desired to do. Doesn’t it stir you to break
out of your seemingly "life as usual” existence.
History
is full of people who lived an extraordinary life. Mother Theresa
stands out in my mind. She lived such an amazing life – not for herself
but rather for others. She looked to the needs of those around her and
made such a tremendous difference in the lives of so many. The main
factor in her "extraordinary” life was the "extraordinary” sacrifice
Mother Theresa made to break out of the ordinary. Not everyone is
willing to do what she did.
If
everyone is doing it, chances are that it is not going to lead to
"exceptional” or "unusual”. So many people are willing to just coast by
existing rather than putting forth an effort to rise above the norm.
Why settle for an existence when life at its highest is within our
grasp. Life can truly be an adventure when we approach it with
enthusiasm, positive expectation and a willingness to pay the price to
obtain the extraordinary.
No
Olympic athlete in any sport ever had the thrill of standing on the
centre podium without having and eye and a heart for the
"extraordinary”.Those who give life a half-hearted commitment usually receive a life comparable to the investment.
Hard work and sacrifice are two of the main ingredients in achieving the extraordinary.
It
begins with desire. However, sad to say, that is also where it ends for
those who just dream. Adding discipline and determination to desire is
a great formula for reaching the mountain peak of "extraordinary”.
Is
life dull for you? Are you bored? What are your goals? What is it that
would make life a total success for you when the time comes to say
farewell to this earthly life and hello to life in eternity?
Set
some goals and break out of the moulds! Live an extraordinary life by
doing something about the things you would ordinarily Just Think About!
