HOW TO HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR – Just Think About It!

"Happy New Year!”"All the best in the New Year!” "Have a great New Year!”
These
are some of the greetings and salutations we have heard recently as
2009 rolled into 2010. Great thoughts, aren’t they? Everyone I know is
looking for the fulfillment of those wishes.
So!
How about it? We are one week into this New Year already. Have you had
a happy week? Has it been all you hoped it would be so far? Have you
faced sorrow and disappointment in any of the past few days? Hang on!
There are still fifty-one weeks left in 2010. Who knows what may happen!
Consider
this thought. Not one day or moment of 2010 will be "happy” just
because we wish it to be so. A "good day” or a "good year” does not
belong to those who simply wish for it. It belongs to those who work at
it.
We
have far too many people who are willing to "let life happen” and far
too few willing to "make life happen”. For various reasons or excuses,
people are more willing to be led rather than take the lead. It is so
much easier to go with the flow rather than swim against the tide.
The
more headlines I read, the more I see people playing the game of laying
the blame. Whenever some people are faced with dealing with the
consequences of their actions, they blame someone else. It’s mom or
dad’s fault; it’s the teacher’s fault; it’s the government’s fault; the
church’s fault. Placing the blame for circumstances in our lives has
done very little, if any good at all, to solve the problem or change
the situations. If we become experts in making other people responsible
for our actions or reactions we can forget about having a "happy New
Year”. It just won’t happen.
It
is not people who wonder where time went that are most happy. Happiness
belongs to those who take charge of their own lives and tell time where
to go. Today is a great day for all of us to have an attitude check.
Our attitude concerning life strongly influences our altitude in life.
Have
you ever heard words like, "You make me so angry” or "You really
frustrate me” or "I would not have reacted like that if you had not …”?
Think about it. Why would anyone be so foolish as to give someone else
that kind of power over their life?
If
I am angry, frustrated, bitter, happy, content or otherwise, it is my
choice – not what someone else "makes” me feel. My actions, my
reactions and my feelings are exactly that – "mine”. I may not be in
control of what others do to me but, I am in control of my response to
what others do to me.
In
2010, am I going to lead or be led? That’s my choice. Am I going to
influence or be influenced? That’s my choice. Am I going to react
negatively or positively? That’s my choice. Am I going to allow the
events of 2009 to destroy the future of 2010? That’s my choice.
Do
you want to have a happy new year in 2010? Then, don’t just wish for it
– work at it. Don’t let someone else decide if your day is going to be
good or bad – you decide. Taking responsibility for my actions,
reactions and feelings is not the only thing I need to do to have a
great new year but it sure is a great start.
Don’t
just make choices – make the right choices. I have always enjoyed
rewards much more than suffering consequences. Just think about it!
