EXPECTATIONS AND REALIZATIONS

I knew it was going to be bad news. I just knew it! As soon as I saw the return address, I knew it could be nothing but bad news. I bought myself a coffee and settled down to read the gloom and doom. Reluctantly, opening the letter, I began to read.

Oh my! Was I wrong! This letter was not even close to what I assumed it would be. It was a revelation to me of just how often my expectations are frequently so far from my realizations.

How often we cause ourselves unnecessary mental anguish or emotional distress by engaging in the practice of assumption. Webster defines assumption as "to take for granted” or "to suppose to be fact”. To assume a thing to be true or false without thorough investigation is the folly of fools and the father of failure.

Sitting on the highway in the middle of nowhere is often the result of one person taking it for granted that the other person put gas in the tank. Someone should have checked it to be sure.

How many good relationships have been destroyed because one person in that relationship believed some unfounded rumour or gossip without getting the facts! Operating on an assumption can have devastating propensities. Assumption is often an assassin of so much good.

One of my favourite TV shows is "Law and Order”. I am intrigued with the grappling for the truth. It is very entertaining to see the depth to which they dig into situations to find the facts. The jury is challenged by the lawyers to ignore their emotions and feelings and to examine the facts to determine a verdict.

Shouldn’t we do the same with people and circumstances in our lives? Shouldn’t our head be well connected to our hearts in making life’s decisions?

Here are a few hints and helps that I trust will enable us to avoid the potential calamities and disasters of assumption. Begin with no presuppositions or prejudices and then proceed.

Firstly, as much as possible, talk person to person and face to face. This will help us to see the body language of the other person and hear their tone of voice. This may say a lot more than just the words they say.

Secondly, when in doubt – ask. What better way to clarify an ambiguity than to ask the right question to the right person at the right time! Don’t think your wife prefers roses instead of "dinner out”. Ask her!

Thirdly, listen carefully to the person who is speaking. The motivation of the person who "knows” is always stronger than that of the person who is plagued by doubts of exactly what is expected.

Fourthly, learn to recognize change. People change and likes and dislikes change with them. Don’t assume your sixteen year old wants to spend as much time with you as her/she did when they were six.

If you want your realizations to fall in line with your expectations, make it your practice to never assume anything. Get the facts and then act accordingly. Just think about it!
