IN DEFIANCE OF DEFEAT – Just Think About It!

The corridors of time and the walls of history are decorated with the names of those who have "made it good”. In spite of seemingly impossible odds and in the face of negative expectations of others, these winners achieved what people said they did not have the ability to do.
What awesome potential lies buried under a mountain of discouragement in the lives of so many people! New inventions! Impressive accomplishments! Great ideas!    Many of them will never be realized simply because someone was afraid to try. Someone said the ability wasn’t there. Someone crushed a dream. Someone poured water on someone else’s fire. Someone smothered the enthusiasm of someone else’s inspiration. There it lies - in ashes! Potential that will never become reality – because one person did not believe in another.
Is there a dream in your heart? Do you have an unexpressed desire to do something special and unique with your life? Has someone, or maybe everyone, told you that for one reason or another you will never see your hopes come true? Take heart! Don’t give up! Be encouraged! Don’t let anyone rain on your parade. If you really want to, you can do it.
Did you know that Walt Disney was once fired by a newspaper editor for having a lack of ideas? I wonder how many others had given up on Mr. Disney besides that editor. The important thing to remember is that Walt Disney never allowed his drive to be diminished by the negative opinions of people around him.
Are you aware that Thomas Edison’s teachers were reported to have said that young Mr. Edison was too stupid to learn much of anything. Thank the Lord Mr. Edison saw the true "light” of his ability or I could be typing this column in the dim illumination of a candle and you could be reading it accordingly.
I remind you that Beethoven, because he preferred to play his own compositions rather than work on musical technique, was referred to by his teacher as "hopeless as a composer”. The world recognizes the name of Beethoven, but, what was his teacher’s name again.
The list continues – the list of those who were branded as "least likely to succeed”. How about you? If a vote was taken on you and me, how would we rate?
Has anyone said of us that it is highly likely that we will ever amount to much?
That kind of expressed opinion will either be a fire that will consume our future or it will cause a flame of determination to rise up within us and consume each negative prediction about us. We will choose to respond either by fulfilling the defeatist expectations of others for us or by becoming all we know we have the potential to become.
Walk the corridors of time and examine the walls of history. Listen to what the voices of the past "achievers” have to say to you. Learn to turn a deaf ear to those who lay claim to your future and imprison you in a small box of their opinion.
I am reminded and I conclude with the words of a very wise person who said
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
I trust that you will be encouraged to defy defeat when you Just Think About It.
