Unmasking Halloween - Just think about it
 
          October 31 is fast approaching. Along with it, comes the annual celebration we have come to know as Halloween.
          While many people observe Halloween with total involvement and view it as a completely innocent "fun time”, an increasing number of Christians believe it to be a spiritually evil time to be totally shunned.
          I realize there are varying thoughts concerning the origin and history of Halloween. On a number of occasions I have preached against the Christian Church participating in any resemblance of Halloween and all it stands for and represents.
          Did Halloween really begin with the Druid priests? Is it really a festival to "Samhain”, the Lord of the dead? Did it really involve human sacrifices in satanic worship? Did ghosts and evil spirits really roam the earth on High Satanic Sabbath? Did the Jack-o-lantern really represent a house that had contributed to satanic sacrifices? Some people say yes while others say absolutely not.
          Here is the question I want to answer. Do I really need to dig that deep into the history of Halloween to decide whether or not as a Christian I should participate in the celebration of Halloween? Don’t the present pictures of Halloween we see before us today give us sufficient indication that this celebration is in direct opposition to the Jesus whom we as Christians claim to love and serve?
          I as a true Christian can have nothing to do with this "spirit” of Halloween. Somehow, I fail to see Jesus, who is my example in all things, dressing in a grotesque mask and a Satan costume celebrating the very evil that caused His death.
          The preoccupation of Halloween with death, demons and disembodied spirits, is perpetuated everywhere. The more fearsome and horrifying the atmosphere that can be created the better the "party”! I find it very difficult to see how Christians can get pleasure from celebrating anything that glorifies the ugliness of evil when we are taught to live for Christ who desires us to celebrate the beauties of life that He came to give.
          The devil is not funny. He is real and he is our enemy. We are in grave (excuse the expression) danger of desensitizing ourselves to the harsh reality of the evil spirit world.
          As Christians, we should be living as far away as possible from the very appearance of evil. We are to celebrate only the things that Christ Himself would celebrate. I just can’t imagine Jesus knocking on my door and saying, "Trick or treat”. Halloween is a "trick” of the devil and, in the end, certainly is not a "treat” for anyone.
          From my perspective there is nothing in Halloween that pertains to Christianity and everything that points to the kingdom of darkness. The Bible asks a very pointed question. "What association does light have with darkness?” The answer is NONE, Christian – absolutely NONE.
          It is time to unmask Halloween for what it really is – an evil hoax. Am I being too narrow minded? I think not. In this case I would much rather be narrow minded to the extreme than to be so broadminded that I leave myself open to becoming so conditioned to evil that it doesn’t bother me.
          It is high time to wake up and choose on which side we stand. When it comes to true Christianity, we are called to either "get in” or "get out”. There is no middle ground.
          You do not have to agree with me. That’s your right! All I can respectfully ask is that you - Just think about it!
