WORKING ON MY WISHES – Just Think About It
Pastor Terry Grimes/ Calvary Pentecostal Church
There are very few of us, if any, who do not have something we wish was "different” in our life. It is almost a daily occurrence to hear someone say, "I wish my marriage was better.” "I wish I had a better education.” "I wish I could save a few bucks”.
Even as I was writing this column, one of our church board members came into my office and spoke to this same issue. He said, "Pastor, I hope I don’t offend you by saying this, but, I think you probably have the same wish I do. Don’t you wish that you could shed a few pounds and be in better physical condition?” My wish is that my need for loss of weight wasn’t so noticeable.
The truth is, however, that wishing things were different never changed one second of history nor did "wishing” ever accomplish one single goal, ambition or dream. People who spend their days wishing often spend their nights dreaming. The conclusion of that process is that we have a society of grumblers and complainers griping about the way things are but they never work to change anything. They are like people living in the twilight zone of the Land of Oz who never seem to be able to find the yellow brick road.
If I want things to change, I must stop "wishing” and start "working”. I must go on the offensive and start doing something about it. I must set some realistic, measurable goals and time lines. Victory is won in the head and heart before the battle toward achievement even begins.
Zig Zigglar said, "The difference between "ordinary” and "extraordinary” is the little "extra”. Many times the only difference between "wishing” and obtaining is a little "work”.
What do you want changed? How badly do you want to change it? Are you willing to pay the price? These questions must be answered honestly and wisely if we are to experience positive change.
If you don’t like it – change it! Stop complaining about the darkness and get up and turn on the light. The best helping hand you will ever find, sometimes the only helping hand, is found at the end of your own arm. Use it!
For those of you who are old enough to recall, there was a wishing song entitled, "Three Coins in a Fountain”. I think we are all aware but often need a reminder that tossing coins in a fountain or blowing out birthday candles and making wishes has seldom brought about much change. It requires nothing less than good old fashion hard work and discipline.
Remember, if you always do what you always did, you will most likely always get what you always got. Therefore, if I don’t like what I got, I must work on changing it. When I start working on my wishing, it is imperative to keep in mind the serenity prayer, "Lord, help me to change the things I can; to accept the things I cannot change and the wisdom to know the difference.
May all you good wishes and dreams come true! Great thought! However, if changing things is accomplished by "working on my wishes”, I need to do more than Just Think about It.
